IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD Research Position in Coastal Processes and Morphology, Belgium

The Department of Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a PhD position to work on coastal processes and morphology starting immediately. The successful candidate will participate in a fundamental strategic research project, ‘‘CREST - Climate resilient coast. Wave action in a changing climate: effects on the dynamics of the coast and implications for future safety strategies’’, funded by the Flemish Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology (IWT) and work in a multidisciplinary team-working environment.

The main objective of the CREST project is to gain a better understanding of nearshore and onshore physical processes and flood risks and to determine the resilience of the natural coastal system in relation to storms and wind in order to have the most appropriate way to deal with potential impacts of climate change. The PhD research will focus on how wind and wave impacts on morphodynamics and natural coastal protection. The main research work will include (1) analyzing seasonal to long-term coastal morphology using a broad range of remote sensing data (e.g. field topographic, LiDAR, Argus video monitoring) at several study sites with different environmental characteristics; (2) investigating meteo-marine forcing regimes and trigger events such as storms; and (3) sensitivity analysis of resilience capacity to sedimentological, morphological and meteo-marine parameters.

Deadline for aplications: December 31st, 2015
