The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a vibrant and ambitious Department with an excellent reputation in research, teaching and knowledge exchange, is seeking to appoint a new Head of Department to take over its leadership during 2016. The Department has a wide-ranging involvement in the profession, both nationally and internationally, with an excellent portfolio of externally funded research. In the recent UK Government-led university research assessment exercise (REF 2014), research in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department was rated 8th in the UK and 1st in Scotland (Times Higher Education Supplement). The Department also boasts a diverse degree programme at undergraduate and masters level, and was commended in its 2015 professional accreditation report for strong industry engagement in both teaching and research. The Department requires a strong and inspirational leader with the vision and drive to build even greater success.
You will be an internationally recognised academic leader with a relevant first degree and a PhD (or equivalent professional qualification), together with a substantial track record in research, teaching and knowledge exchange, including management and leadership roles. You will be an excellent communicator, capable of inspiring staff and students and driving forward the Department’s ambitions and strategic aims across its full range of activities.
Appointment as Head of Department will be for a fixed-term period of 3 years initially and you will also be appointed to an open-ended substantive post in the Department at a senior level, in accordance with your qualifications, standing and experience. For appointment at Professorial level: Subject to the Charter and Statutes and Ordinances and Regulations of the University, as Professor you will be responsible to the Court of the University through the Principal for providing leadership in your academic area and will report annually on this.
