The Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a candidate for a PhD position in the field of wave loading on offshore wind turbine structures. The PhD position is part of the project DeRisk – De-risking of ULS wave loads by the Innovation Fund Denmark.
A significant cost of wind turbine offshore structures relates to the costs from substructure and tower which are mainly dimensioned by the wind and wave loading. Recent numerical investigations have indicated that both monopile and jacket structures may be sensitive to steep nonlinear wave loads exciting impulsive and ringing-type responses. The purpose of this PhD project is to quantify the uncertainty of present industrial design methods with respect to load levels on the wind turbine structure and improve the methods where possible.
