Flood Modeler (Hydrology), Newark, CA, United States

The RMS model development team boasts the best scientists building mathematical models that predict the distributions of possible damage due to the effects of tropical storms, extra-tropical storms, thunderstorms, storm-surges and fluvial floods, using a combination of observed data, reanalysis data, numerical and statistical models and data assimilation.   

RMS is the pioneer the development and application of complex statistical and numerical modeling methods for the quantification of natural hazard risk.    RMS’ risk models are the most detailed and comprehensive models of natural catastrophes produced anywhere in the world.    Our clients include several hundred insurance and reinsurance companies as well as brokers, banks, hedge funds, regional and local governments, and multilateral agencies.  

Objective of the Flood Modeler:

The Flood team focuses on developing high-resolution, large-scale flood models which are used to assess flood risk. The modeling work carried out by the flood team encompasses all steps from hazard modeling to loss modeling. The department has an engaged, collaborative working environment within clear scientific, motivated and technological culture.    

Key Accountabilities & Deliverables:

  • Further develop the flood model components (e.g., large scale modeling of stochastic rainfall processes, rainfall-runoff processes, defense failure mechanisms) and to seek for scientific and technological improvements;
  • Quality-check the results (e.g., calibration results);
  • Evaluate final model output (e.g., flood footprints, flood losses and their spatial patterns using statistical and GIS tools);
  • Further develop the usability of the flood models in RMS(one);
  • Further advancement of hydrological and hydraulic modules by researching and implementing novel scientific techniques (e.g. advancing the stochastic modules and peril modules that are at the center of the flood model);
  • Checking of model results (both hazard and loss data) by comparison to existing flood maps and loss benchmarks;
  • Perform research into consistency between observed and modeled spatial patterns, seasonality of floods, flood magnitudes).



  • Advanced degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Hydraulics, Hydrometeorology, Water Resources, or a related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of river hydraulics, computational hydrodynamics and numerical modelling (e.g. numerically solving PDEs)
  • Familiar with existing hydraulic models, e.g. HEC series models and other 1-D and 2-D hydraulic/hydrodynamic models
  • Experience in creating FEMA flood inundation maps is a plus
  • Strong programming skills (GPU computiong, Parallel Computing, FORTRAN, C/C++, R, Python)
  • Experience in using GIS appliations (e.g., ArcGIS, GRASS)
  • Experience with working on Linux/Unix platforms, and handling large data sets
  • Advanced background in statistics and probability theory is a plus
  • Experience in coastal circulation, storm surge or tsunami modeling is a plus
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to achieve goals and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks.
  • Highly motivated and self-directed in advancing complex projects
