There are approximately 200,000 blockages in the UK each year which account for 55% of sewer flooding incidents and more than 3,000 properties affected each year. Historically, water companies have relied on customers to report blockages and have responded to these by using reactive repair and maintenance approach.
New water level and other sensors and related information and communication technology that enable wireless transmission of field data to the company control room in near real-time are becoming increasingly available and affordable.
This project will develop new technology that will utilise this and other data to predict/detect and diagnose occurrence of blockages and hence enable much more proactive management of these events resulting in major breakthrough in the field. The technology developed in this project will be tested and validated on the pilot areas within the United Utilities region. The project will result in a number of key benefits including improved customer service, reduced operational and maintenance costs via improved handling of blockage events with more proactive and faster responses plus more.
