IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD Students - Impacts of trial liming on chemical and ecological quality of the West Dart River, UK

Although the Dart catchment in SW England is predominantly classified as being of good status it is notable that this is not the case for pH, which is failing under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). It has been agreed with stakeholders to trial a programme of calcium carbonate addition to the West Dart in order to raise pH with the expectation of improving chemical and ecological status. The PhD offers the opportunity for undertaking chemical and ecological monitoring in conjunction with modelling to fully characterise and the impacts that the liming trial will have on the West Dart.

The overall aim is to explore if limestone application can prevent pH troughs from dipping below levels biologically relevant to salmon survival rates (c. <pH 5.5) and assess any changes in diatom, macro-invertebrate and macro-algal biological assemblages of the test site against recognised biotic indices in order to contribute to meeting good ecological status.
