The College of Engineering at Penn State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Department Head in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The College seeks an individual who will provide innovative and energetic leadership with effective administrative skills and a strong commitment to higher education. The successful candidate should have a widely recognized reputation in Civil or Environmental Engineering. An earned doctorate is required.
The Department currently has 30 full-time faculty including 23% women plus a number of joint and affiliated faculty from other departments within Penn State. The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department offers a BS degree in civil engineering and an undergraduate minor in environmental engineering as well as offers MS, MEng, and PhD degrees in both civil engineering and environmental engineering. The Department graduates 170 bachelors and 50 graduate students each year. They are a highly ranked civil engineering program by US News and World Report at #17 for undergraduate and #22 for graduate.
There are a number of unique research facilities associated with the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department including a large infrastructure testing and evaluation laboratory that is focused on composite materials and concrete testing; an environmental engineering lab that includes a large wastewater treatment facility; a pavement laboratory; a test track for a wide range of transportation investigations; and an experimental forest that focuses on hydrologic processes, sustainability of hardwood forests and water quality. Existing research strengths in the Department include environmental, geo‐materials, structures, transportation, and water resources while future growth is being planned in numerous interdisciplinary areas. These key areas are strongly supported by the university through consortia devoted to the Cyber Science, Energy and the Environment, Life Sciences, Materials, and Natural Gas Research. The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department has been a leading innovator in multi-disciplinary activities, both within Penn State and through partnerships with other universities and industry.
