|PhD Position at IH Cantabria, Spain - Numerical modeling of tsunami wave interaction with coastal structures
|The Environmental Hydraulics Institute "IH Cantabria" is offering a full-time 3-year PhD position on numerical modeling of tsunami wave interaction with coastal structures. This full-time position is open to EU and Overseas students. The funding covers 13,800€ for the first two years, and 16,416€ the third year.
The work will be undertaken under the supervision of Prof. Inigo J. Losada and Prof. Javier L. Lara (firstname.lastname@example.org) at IH Cantabria at the Universidad de Cantabria (Spain). The candidate will be working in the area of Hydrodynamics and Coastal Infrastructures group at IH Cantabria, and she/he will also be involved in parallel projects in the framework of wave-structure interaction to complement her/his background.
The project will be focused on the knowledge improvement of the tsunami wave interaction with coastal structures by means of CFD modeling. The final objective is to enhance the prediction of the tsunami wave exerted forces on coastal structures and infrastructures to determine stability criteria for safer designs. IHFOAM model (ihcantabria.com/IHFOAM), a new solver developed by IH Cantabria on OpenFOAM platform, will be used. The model will be updated/modified to consider a correct representation of the tsunami wave in order to get realistic results and insights into the nature of the tsunami wave transformation and its interaction with coastal structures. Additional laboratory experiments will be developed to validate the numerical model.
The Environmental Hydraulics Institute "IH Cantabria" (www.ihcantabria.com/en/) is a joint research center that carries out research, knowledge transfer and training of specialists in the fields of fresh and saltwater. The qualifications for the candidate are:
· M.S. degree or equivalent in Coastal Engineering, Fluid Mechanics or Mechanics with strong experience in numerical simulation;
· Good knowledge on wave mechanics
· Good knowledge on High Performance Computing;
· Good knowledge of Fortran, C++ and Python scripting;
· Background and demonstrated experience in the use of OpenFOAM model;
· Good knowledge of both written and spoken English language;
