Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Post Doctoral Research Associate Specializing in Coastal Ocean Modeling for Climate Change, Sea level Rise, and Ocean Acidification Research, Seattle, WA
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) government facility.  PNNL’s Marine Sciences Laboratory conducts research towards achieving sustainable energy from the oceans, guide adaptation to climate change and population growth in coastal zones, and ensure the security of our coastal and marine lifelines.  Our core research focus areas are (a) Integrated coastal modeling, (b) Marine biogeochemistry, (c) Ecosystems science, (d) Aquatic toxicology, (e) Marine biotechnology, (f) Marine policy, (g) Sensing systems engineering, (h) Scientific research dive team, and (i) In-water science and engineering support. PNNL invites applications from recent coastal, environmental, civil, oceanography and engineering graduates specializing in coastal hydrodynamic and biogeochemical modeling and analysis. The selected candidate will have an opportunity to participate in the coastal ocean modeling activities at the Marine Sciences Laboratory which include modeling of physical, chemical, and biological behavior of fresh- and salt-water systems coupled to landscapes, atmospheric processes, and human systems. We have numerous multi-disciplinary model development activities in progress related to climate change impacts and adaptation, sustainable environment and human perturbations, sea level rise impacts to water quality, storm surge and flooding vulnerability, and extraction of renewable energy from the oceans.
The selected candidates will join a well-established group of coastal ocean modelers in our Seattle office. In collaboration with Washington State Department of Ecology and U.S. EPA, PNNL has developed a 3-D finite volume hydrodynamic and transport model for the Salish Sea using FVCOM code. The Salish Sea Model is currently being used by agencies in connection with nutrient pollution management, and assessment of future impacts related to sea level rise, climate change, and ocean acidification. Position responsibilities include improving and extending the existing Salish Sea Model and setting up, testing, and incorporating new modules related to carbon chemistry, particulate transport, and biogeochemical processes into the model code.  Our primary modeling platforms are based on FVCOM, ROMS, and CE-QUAL-ICM. We however also have projects that utilize numerous other codes such as DELFT-3D, EFDC and CE-QUAL-W2. Successful candidate must demonstrate prior experience in conducting oceanographic modeling based research using one or more of the leading state of the art 3-D ocean modeling codes and interest in simulation of carbon cycle and future climate scenarios.
