IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Fully-funded PhD project, School of Engineering, University of Aberdeen, UK
The PhD project “Hydraulic resistance in free-surface flows: an experimental study” will focus on developing, through high-resolution laboratory experiments, new physical insights into key friction mechanisms due to viscous stress, turbulent stress, form-induced stress, secondary currents, non-uniformity, and unsteadiness. The experiments will cover appropriate ranges of roughness shapes and densities, flow and roughness Reynolds numbers, aspect ratio, and relative submergence. The project will also explore possibilities for drag control by manipulating roughness shapes and spacing to suppress/enhance particular friction constituents. The selected PhD student will closely work with a research team of the EPSRC-funded project “Bed friction in rough-bed free-surface flows: a theoretical framework, roughness regimes, and quantification”. The funding is available for UK and EU students only.
