|Teaching Associate: Water Engineering, University of Strathclyde, UK
|The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), University of Strathclyde, is seeking to appoint a Teaching Associate to support our strategic growth through developing Distance and Flexible Learning and online continual professional development (CPD) courses in Water/Hydraulic Engineering, and to support our industry engagement.
Recently the Department has seen considerable success in teaching and research. We are a dynamic department, with a reputation for having a friendly and active culture. We are internationally renowned for our water research within our Centre for Water, Environment, Sustainability and Health, and our expertise is sought after globally by governments, NGOs and the industrial sector. We offer two undergraduate degrees (MEng/BEng (Hons)) in Civil Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering and popular and highly successful MSc degrees including Civil Engineering, Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering. We additionally offer four MSc degrees via distance learning (Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health Science, Sustainability and Environmental Studies). We are seeking to expand distance learning further to offer relevant associated online CPD as well as further distance learning MSc degrees.
As a Teaching Associate you will design and deliver a range distance learning and CPD classes, including one or more of the following: hydraulics, optimisation of water distribution systems, water infrastructure (water and/or wastewater), hydrogeology, hydropower, and groundwater transport/remediation. You will commit to excellence in teaching and learning, providing a high-quality student learning experience. You will undertake student assessment, feedback and examination activities, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the curriculum. In addition, you will perform Department, Faculty and/or University administrative functions, for example through active participation in committees and you will also engage with external partners across the sectors in supporting other industrial and commercialisation activities.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD* level in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or you will be educated to Degree level with significant, relevant teaching experience. You will have experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, preferably in the fields of water distribution systems, water infrastructure (water and/or wastewater), hydrogeology, hydropower, and groundwater transport/remediation. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to plan and organise your own workload and you will have the ability to work independently as well as within a team. You will be highly motivated, with an ability to motivate others.
*Applications from candidates with relevant experience, who are close to completion of a PhD are welcomed. In such circumstances, the appointment will be made at KE Assistant level (Grade 06 salary scale £27,285 - £30,688) and duties will be adjusted to reflect the grade of the post. Upon the award of the PhD, the duties and grade will be revised accordingly.
Brief Outline of Job:
As a Teaching Associate, you will design and deliver a range of distance learning and CPD classes and learning activities, potentially including: hydraulics, water distribution systems, water infrastructure (water and/or wastewater), hydrogeology, hydropower, and groundwater transport/remediation. You will undertake laboratory design and teaching, student assessment, feedback and examination activities, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the curriculum. In addition, you will perform Department, Faculty and/or University administrative functions, for example through mentoring an online programme or in active participation in relevant committees. You will also work actively to engage with external partners across the sector in delivering CPD courses and other industrial and commercialisation activities.
1. Design and deliver a range of water/hydraulic engineering classes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including contribution to curriculum review and enhancement.
2. Undertake student assessment and examination activities, including the provision of appropriate feedback to students.
3. Participate in the wider objectives of the CEE distance learning and CPD programme, including engaging in a range of contributions to develop the practical and online aspects of the education programme, including pedagogical support of our growing cohort of distance and flexible learning students, e.g. tutorial, webinar and other support for our distance learners.
4. Provide excellence in teaching and enhance the student learning experience to a standard appropriate to the University’s international standing, including participation in course review, student feedback exercises and continuous quality improvements.
5. Collaborate with members of the Centre, Department and across the University as appropriate to enhance the University’s reputation in teaching and learning, on campus and online. This may include participate in Faculty/University wide initiatives.
6. Critically evaluate and reflect on teaching practice and methodology and collaborate with colleagues on course development activities and in the planning and implementation of curriculum changes.
7. Collaborate with colleagues on the development of knowledge exchange activities by, for example, participating in initiatives which establish educational links with industry and influence public policy and the professions.
8. Plan and manage own workload, with guidance from colleagues as required.
9. Contribute to Department, Faculty and/or University administrative and management functions, for example through membership of committees and/or by acting as class/module/year co-ordinator.
10. Contribute to the development and delivery of outreach activities (including Summer Schools).
Educational and/or Professional Qualifications (E=Essential, i.e. a candidate must meet all essential criteria to be considered for selection, D=Desirable)
E1 PhD in Civil Engineering or a related discipline; or a Degree in Civil Engineering or hydro-related discipline with relevant professional experience in a similar role.
D1 Membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies (including the Higher Education Academy). Experience
E2 Experience in delivering teaching and learning at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, HE/FE college sector levels or relevant industrial experience delivering education and training.
E3 Sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in water engineering, hydraulics, hydrogeology or related subjects to deliver established teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to contribute to course development and scholarship activities.
E4 Experience of developing and delivering learning assessment activities.
D2 Experience of managing teaching activities and teams, including mentoring learners etc.
D3 Experience of curriculum development.
D4 Experience of industry engagement commensurate for career stage.
D5 Experience of knowledge exchange related activities.
D6 Experience of relevant scholarship and/or research activity.
