Intelligent Finite Element Aided Inference of Quantum Technology Gravity Gradiometer (iFEEL)

Applicants are invited for a research position in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham to develop an advanced numerical modelling tool to infer microgravity data from field experiments and theoretical Quantum Technology (QT) gravity gradiometer data to detect buried features and their condition with a particular focus on detecting voids and washouts around tunnels and deep sewers. This position is offered as part of an ambitious and exciting research project funded by the QT-Hub to develop innovative techniques to extend the use of quantum technology in civil engineering related application.

The post offers initially a 3 month, full-time fixed-term contract with potential for an extension; part-time applicants may be considered depending on the applicant’s circumstances.

The post holder will be responsible for the planning and development of numerical models and will assist the PI in writing the research reports and the dissemination of the project findings through journal and conference publications. The candidate will be contributing to prepare proposals to secure additional research grants.

Person Specification:
The successful applicant will have, or expect soon to obtain, a PhD in the field of numerical modelling and computational mechanics applied to engineering/physical problems and an excellent command of programming in Matlab. Prior experience in use of finite element method, knowledge of machine learning-based techniques, good organizational and communication skills and a good track record of high quality research are essential.
