Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

American University of Sharjah (AUS) is seeking applicants for the position of Head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

The BS degree offered by the Department of Civil Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). The MS degree is offered with thesis and project options. AUS is licensed and its programs are accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the UAE Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Affairs Division. The department currently has 21 full-time faculty, 3 lab instructors, an administrative assistant, approximately 500 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students. Strengths include a dedicated, energetic and collegial faculty, an engaged student body, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a highly supportive college and university administration. Students and faculty represent very diverse backgrounds and nationalities; more than 90 nationalities are present on campus. A major facilities expansion for the College of Engineering is under way that will approximately double the lab, classroom, office and support functions of the college and department. This expansion includes programmatic development of several doctoral programs within the college, and a major expansion of university-wide research programs. In the department this will include areas such as environmental engineering, smart transportation, sustainable construction and advanced construction materials.

AUS, an equal opportunity employer, is located in the Emirate of Sharjah, one of the seven emirates within the United Arab Emirates. It is a 20 minute drive from Dubai. The UAE is a highly diversified, technologically advanced and secure country with an excellent reputation for tourism, business, and engineering. Founded in 1997, AUS is a private, not-for-profit, co-educational institution with a healthy mix between teaching and research activities. Funding for research projects and graduate students is provided internally from AUS and externally from a variety of corporate, governmental and international sources.

The successful candidate must hold earned degrees, including the doctorate in civil engineering or a very closely related area. The candidate must demonstrate leadership in research, as evidenced by an outstanding publication record. In addition, a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and professional service is required. Preference will be given to candidates with ABET-accreditation experience.

The successful candidate must be a dynamic and innovative individual with demonstrated leadership and administrative experience within the context of the American education model. Strong communication skills to engage with a wide variety of constituents within and outside the university are necessary. The selected individual will have the opportunity to develop and articulate a vision and long-range plan for the department in research strategy to include areas vital to Sharjah, UAE and the region. Enhancing funding opportunities for research, outreach and graduate student support are important dimensions that the Head of Department will lead.

Interested candidates in this strategic position in the College of Engineering should fill out an application form and upload the required documents in a PDF format using the Online Applications. The selected candidate is expected to assume duties around mid-August 2018. Review of candidates will begin on December 1, 2017, and will continue until the position is filled. Notification will be made only to shortlisted candidates who will be selected for initial Skype-based interview.
