The Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Engineering (IMFIA) was created in 1986 resuming the line of work initiated by Engineer Oscar J. Maggiolo in 1959, with the goal of developing knowledge and teaching in close relation with the resolution of the concrete problems of the region. Today the Institute staff includes 30 professors and about 50 research associates and assistants.
The IMFIA participates in the undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuous professional education within the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Today, the IMFIA is heavily involved in the undergraduate degrees in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Naval Engineering, and in the postgraduate degrees in Applied Fluid Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, and Energy Engineering. The IMFIA has a long tradition of research and extension activities on topics related to Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Engineering. These activities are usually performed under agreements with public and private organizations, and through research and development grants, both national and international.
