Junior Scientific Software Engineer, Deltares, the Netherlands

Junior Scientific Software Engineer

The job

  • You develop user-friendly scientific software tools for water and soil research;
  • You work together with scientific software engineers and specialists on product development in a scrum team;
  • You analyze the software requirements together with product owners and specialists;
  • You accelerate and renew existing simulation models by using the latest IT opportunities;
  • You explore the possibilities of data science and new technologies, such as cloud computing, for application in the field of delta technology.

The Deltares Software Centre develops numerical simulation software, where we make use of various techniques such as flexible grids, high performance computing, modelling frameworks and user interfaces. You will be part of a team of scientific software engineers, who work in close cooperation with each other. The specialists from the various disciplines of Deltares are closely involved in the specification and validation of new software. Our staff works with modern development techniques such as Agile, TDD and XP. The user interfaces are written in C#, the numerical simulation software in Fortran and early warning systems in Java. We use Python and C + + as well. The position will be based in Delft.

Job qualifications

  • You have completed an MSc in Computer science and have affinity with the natural sciences, or you have completed a science education and have experience in software engineering;
  • You have the ambition to develop high-quality software in a scientific environment;
  • You have experience in higher order programming languages (C #, Java, Python, C + +). Experience with complex software architecture is a plus;
  • You are eager to work on new technological challenges;
  • You have the competence to develop innovative solutions for complex problems;
  • You are driven by quality and content;
  • You have good social and communication skills;
  • Individually as well as in a team you thrive and exceed;
  • You speak English fluently, and Dutch as well, or you are willing to learn Dutch.
