IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD fellowship on Coastal Morphodynamics at UPC, Spain
The Coastal Morphodynamics Group (http://df.upc.edu/en/morfos) of the Physics Department of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain), has a fellowship available for a PhD student on fundamental processes of beach morphodynamics (“Ayudas para contratos predoctorales para la formación de doctores 2015”, Spanish “Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad”).

The objetive of the PhD project is to gain understanding on the interactions between surf zone morphodynamic patterns on sandy beaches, combining video and field observations at Castelldefels beach (south of Barcelona) with process-based mathematical modelling. The surf-zone moprodynamic patterns include shore-parallel bars, crescentic bars (also called rip-channel systems), transverse bars, megacusps and beach cusps, and their possible interactions with larger scale patterns will also be explored. An existing video monitoring software will be used and extended when necessary to extract shorelines, barlines and other information from the images of the video monitoring system that the team has in Castelldefels. Mathematical models already developed by the team will be used and extended when necessary to investigate the physical processes behind the pattern interactions. Model results will be compared with observations in Castelldefels and other beaches worldwide.

We are looking for a well qualified student with a degree in one of the following topics: physics, physical oceanography, civil engineering, physical geography, geology, mathematics or related fields. We offer a 4-year appointment.
