Engineering Workshop Technician, Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, UK

CEH are the leading UK organisation for long-term monitoring of the environment – measuring all aspects of the water cycle, soils, greenhouse gases, and ecology.  These long-term datasets are essential for improved quantification, understanding and modelling of the land surface and its response to change both in the UK and overseas, ultimately informing managers and policymakers of better options for a broad range of environmental challenges.  We operate a large number of continuous environmental field monitoring stations, including weather stations, river water quality and flow monitoring, and state-of-the-art eddy covariance systems.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced mechanical/electro-mechanical technician to work with a dynamic team in our workshop and occasionally out in the field.  You will get first class hands on training and benefit from a wide range of experiences in using leading edge equipment.  This is an exciting opportunity for anyone wishing to enhance their skills and knowledge whilst working in an organisation that prides itself on being a flexible and considerate employer.

About you

You will report to the Engineering Workshop Manager to produce, from drawings, machined parts and completed assemblies.  You will be required to operate conventional lathes, milling machines, one semi-automatic CNC lathe and welding equipment. Flexibility and skills to work across engineering disciplines is required – there could be a small amount of wiring; installation, service and maintenance of equipment at remote field sites so a full driving licence is essential.

Eligibility to apply

To work for CEH, you must be eligible to live and work in the UK without the requirement for a work permit. CEH can only apply for a work permit in cases where there are no suitably qualified or experienced resident workers; otherwise applicants should normally be resident in the UK or a national of the European Union.
