The College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to begin July 1, 2017. The department seeks an individual who has a demonstrated record of scholarly and administrative achievement in academia, industry, or government. The Chair will lead the Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty and staff in their mission of excellence in education, research, and service while promoting a culture of safety and a welcoming, inclusive environment. We seek an individual with the vision and experience to further our strong tradition of educational excellence, to elevate the department’s prominence in civil and environmental engineering research, grow our M.S. and Ph.D. programs, and to work with diverse and varied stakeholders to integrate the department activities and goals with the strategic plans of the College and University.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering consists of 28 full-time faculty members, 33 professional staff, over 125 full-time graduate students, and over 500 undergraduate majors. The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in both Civil and Environmental Engineering. Externally-funded research and service activities exceed $6.0 million annually. Experiential learning is a strength of the Department at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and students are encouraged to become involved with faculty and staff research efforts. The Department has strong educational and research programs in environmental sciences and engineering, construction, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering. The department houses the Center for Technology and Training; Tribal Technical Assistance Program; U.S. E.P.A. Environmental Finance Center for the Great Lakes Region; and the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education. Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged through the Michigan Tech Transportation Institute; Michigan Tech Research Institute; Great Lakes Research Center; Center for Water and Society; Sustainable Futures Institute; Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences Institute; the D80 Center; and other campus-wide initiatives.
