|Project Title: SPH Modelling of multi-phase flows in nuclear containment vessels
During decommissioning operations, the nuclear industry will face a number of challenges relating to the understanding of materials behaviour. New waste streams will be produced which are chemically more complex, leading to the presence of multiple phases making these difficult to process using the existing knowledge. By developing new methods to understand and predict materials behaviour, the industry will be able to more effectively develop engineering solutions to these problematic wastes. An example is the Waste Vitrification Plant, where the mixing of solids from plant clean-out and glass forming melts could result in inhomogenous mixtures which may prove challenging to plant.
This PhD project will focus on the development of a modelling technique, based upon Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), to simulate fluids containing two or more partially miscible liquids. The research will aim to better understand how different species within a mixture interact. The ability to simulate the behaviour of complex fluid mixtures could lead to significant improvements in industrial processes, such as the vitrification of radioactive waste.
The simulation results will be validated against experimental data captured at NNL’s Facilities. It is expected that the project student will spend up to 6 months working closely with NNL on industrial placements throughout the PhD.

You should also have strong computation skills, programming (C++/Fortran), good level of UG maths for engineering, knowledge of physics relevant to free-surface and/or multi-phase flow.
