IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Funded MRes Scholarship, Swansea University, UK

A significant proportion of Welsh coastline has been identified as vulnerable to coastal erosion and flooding during storms. In addition, numerous coastal sites around Wales have been recognised as potential sites for marine renewable energy generation. However, climate-related changes to the intensity, frequency and track of incident storms in the medium to long term timescales may have significant impacts on beach stability, coastal flooding, marine renewable energy resource and the reliability of marine energy resource in future. As a result, it is extremely important to investigate and understand potential medium to long term future changes to storm climate around Wales.

The primary aim of the proposed project is to investigate climate change impacts on the storm wave climate around Wales in order to determine future threats to shoreline stability and marine renewable energy generation. Historic measured or modelled wave data around the Welsh coastline will be used for the analysis.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with Natural Resources Wales. The project will help to contribute to NRW’s commitment to establish a good knowledge and understanding of the Welsh coastal environment. An improved evidence base produced by this project will help support NRW’s strategic and operational decision making, and inform decision making by others, in relation to planning, adaptation and management of the coastline.

Academic Requirements:

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in civil engineering (or a related subject) with a classification of 2.1 or above.

Funding Details

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The stipend will be limited to a maximum of £11,358 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances.
