IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Lecturer in Civil Engineering, University of Limerick, UK

Overall Purpose of the Job:

The principal activity will be to design and deliver lectures, tutorials and other learning activities to monitor student comprehension in English at undergraduate level at Henan Polytechnic University, Henan Province, Jiaozuo, China. Close liaison with HPU and University of Limerick staff is required to monitor the need for supplementary vocabularies or documentation in Chinese, as required.

Job Description:

The School of Civil Engineering at Henan Polytechnic University [HPU] in association with the Department Civil Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Limerick [UL] wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Civil Engineering to support the international collaboration between these institutes. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses at HPU through English, in a variety of Civil Engineering topics, including structural analysis, design of steel and timber structures, soil mechanics and finite element analysis.

The successful candidate must be prepared to be flexible in their approach to teaching and assessment, taking due account of the wide range of English language competence in the student cohort and collaborate as appropriate with HPU staff to achieve the best outcomes for students. The use of various teaching technologies and active learning strategies has been a feature of the collaboration to date. Applicants must have a PhD degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline and at least two years’ experience teaching in English preferably at University level. Applicants should be fluent English speakers. Experience of teaching students for whom English is not their first language will be an advantage. The successful candidate will spend a short period for orientation and briefing at the University of Limerick, campus before transferring to the HPU campus in the Autumn of 2016.
