The Charles E. Via, Jr., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech seeks qualified applicants for a non-tenure track Professor of Practice position. The primary duties associated with this position will be teaching undergraduate courses offered by the CEE Department. Additional duties may include advising undergraduate students, coaching student competition teams, and performing assigned administrative functions.

Initially, it is envisioned that during an academic year, the teaching responsibilities of this position will relate to the areas of land development engineering, real estate development, professional and legal issues in civil engineering, Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) and the Program in Real Estate related to real estate development. However, there may be instances when the person in this position could be called upon to teach in one or more disciplinary areas within the undergraduate program in the CEE Department.

A MS degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field is required and a PhD is preferred. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is strongly recommended; the ability to be registered as a PE is required. Significant professional experience in at least two of the following areas – land development design, real estate development, and project management – is required, along with demonstrated knowledge of software tools currently used in these areas. Should an applicant not have knowledge of or experience in real estate development, a willingness to learn and teach real estate courses is expected

Experience in teaching at the university level, evaluating student projects, and mentoring students in a design environment is desired. Credentials for appointment or promotion to the rank of Professor of Practice must document a record of significant professional experience and distinguished professional achievement as well as regional, national, or international prominence in engineering practice.

The initial appointment will be for a period of two years, with subsequent renewals contingent on available funding, performance, and need of service.

The CEE Department has 55 faculty members and a current full-time enrollment of approximately 550 undergraduate and 330 graduate students. U.S. News and World Report ranked the department 9th out of all civil engineering departments in the nation in undergraduate education, 8th for graduate education in civil engineering, and 7th for graduate education in environmental engineering.

Virginia Tech is a recipient of the National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the participation of women in academic science and engineering careers. Virginia Tech is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. The CEE Department strongly supports the Virginia Tech Principles of Community. Information about the CEE Department is available on the web at www.cee.vt.edu.
