Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering, Michigan Technological University, United States

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Tech, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in structural engineering at the Assistant Professor level, however other levels may be considered for exceptional candidates. The successful candidate will be able to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the Department, develop and maintain an externally-funded research program that complements existing departmental strengths, supervise and mentor graduate students, and be involved in department, university, and professional service. A PhD in civil engineering or a closely related field is required. The ability to become licensed as a PE or SE is desirable.

The civil engineering program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering graduates about 100 BSCEstudents and about 30 MSCE and PhD students each year. Current structural engineering faculty are involved in research in infrastructure design, monitoring, and management including transportation structures, buildings, and wind turbines. These research activities include monitoring, remote sensing, structural health monitoring, risk assessment, and structural control. The faculty have a close working relationship with the Michigan Department of Transportation, as well as the Michigan Tech Transportation Institute (MTTI) and the Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI). In addition, the structures group has been and is active in research in other areas, including prestressed concrete, ultra-high performance concrete, timber structures, wind engineering, sustainability. and hazard mitigation.

The research statement must outline areas of technical expertise that complement the Department’s strengths and lead to an active research program; and the teaching statement must show which Department courses the applicant is willing to teach, as well as which courses the applicant would propose to develop (particularly at the graduate level).
