Call for candidates for the Europe Division
The next Europe Division elections will take place in December. Anyone interested in serving in the Division Leadership Team please contact Estibaliz Serrano at IAHR Madrid by October 30th.

EU Contest for Young Scientists
The EU Contest is the successor to the Philips contest, which ran from 1968-88 and brought together the winners from National Contests. The then President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors, was approached in 1987 about the European Commission taking on the running of the Contest. After consulting with the competent bodies and Committees, the Commission decided to support the Contest.
The 1st EU Contest Finals took place in Brussels in 1989. Since then, the event has been hosted in Copenhagen, Zürich, Seville, Berlin, Luxembourg, Newcastle upon Tyne, Helsinki, Milan, Porto, Thessaloniki, Amsterdam, Bergen, Vienna, Budapest, Dublin, Moscow, Stockholm, Valencia, Copenhagen, Paris, Lisbon and Helsinki.
You can view by country or by research area and also download medium-resolution versions of any of the event. For further information, visit the official website. The 24th EU Contest will take place in Bratislava.

Clarifying the limits of European coastal waters
Researchers attempting to establish the limits of coastal waters in Europe have found that national declarations of coastal waters contain a number of inconsistencies regarding the definition from the Water Framework Directive. In particular, the national declarations over-estimated the area of coastal waters by almost 12% overall, which could affect the results of ecological assessments required by several major EU environmental policies. Further information here.

Dr. Gaele Rodenhuis passed away on Saturday 8th October, 2011
Gaele was a highly valued Council Member of IAHR during the period 2000-2008 and was responsible for organising two special meetings for Directors of Water Research Institutes during the IAHR Beijing and Seoul World Congresses. He was also active in collaboration between IAHR and IWA in efforts to raise awareness of the importance of research in solving water problems during the World Water Forum in Kyoto in 2003. For many years a member of the Board of Directors of Delft Hydraulics, he was responsible for operations, research and development. With an education in applied mathematics and computer modelling this also included responsibility for the Delft Systems- the large modelling systems that Delft Hydraulics markets world-wide. We have set up a condolence page, if you would like to leave a message, please click here.

Research & Development

Satellite technology helps monitor water quality in lakes
New research reveals how scientists can monitor water quality in European lakes using sensors mounted on satellites. The technique is a promising and cost-effective new tool to classify and monitor the ecological status of lakes more reliably under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). EULAKES is a scientific project, financed by the European Union - from 2010 to 2013 - throughout Central Europe Programme. More information available at the official website.

2nd UrbanFlood Workshop 2011
November 3, 2011, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
UrbanFlood is a 7th framework project supported by the European Union which investigates the use of sensors within flood embankments to support an online early warning system and monitoring system and real time emergency management. “Safer dikes are not only stronger but also smarter dikes”. The online early warning system is generic, and can also be applied for other hazards and threats, such as wildfires, earthquakes etc.
Following the success of the first workshop in November 2010, the second UrbanFlood Workshop with the title “Intelligent dike monitoring for the 21st century” will again be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and is planned for Thursday 3rd November 2011, to coincide with the International Water Week Amsterdam (IWWA).
